Man convicted of drug trafficking in Houston County gets hit with $1.2M fine
A convicted trafficker who was distributing drugs in Houston County and other Middle Georgia counties was sentenced to 30 years and fined over a million dollars, according to a news release from Houston County District Attorney Eric Edwards on Friday.
Before jurors were selected in his trial, Jermaine Ronnell Hughes, 36, of Cochran, pleaded guilty Monday to trafficking methamphetamine, trafficking cocaine, and possessing a firearm during the commission of a crime. This case was one of the many he has faced regarding drug trafficking, Edwards said.
Hughes was caught on Aug. 21, 2023, after law enforcement conducted a traffic stop. When they searched his car, they found “trafficking amounts” of both meth and cocaine. They also found a gun underneath his seat. The evidence uncovered led to his arrest, according to Edwards.
“The stop and arrest followed an extensive investigation into a drug-distribution operation that was purchasing narcotics out of the Atlanta area and transporting them for redistribution throughout Houston County and the Middle Georgia region,” Edwards said in the news release.
The investigation led to the arrest of 17 people who face various drug charges as a result, the prosecutor said.
Hughes’ plea led Judge G.E. “Bo” Adams to sentence him to 30 years in prison, followed by 15 years of probation. Adams also ordered him to pay a $1.2 million fine, according to Edwards.
“Large-scale trafficking operations like this are not victimless crimes,” Edwards said. “They fuel addiction, violence, and instability across Middle Georgia. Mr. Hughes was not a casual offender. He was a key participant in a coordinated drug distribution network operating across county lines, armed and fully aware of the damage being done.”
Hughes also has pending charges in two other counties in Middle Georgia, according to Edwards.
