Macon man fleeing officers jumps into Ocmulgee River to escape, Bibb County deputies say
A traffic stop in Macon took a “wild turn” when the suspect led officers on a chase, got out of his vehicle and leapt into the Ocmulgee River, according to a Facebook post from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office Thursday.
Cpl. Toni Lewis was conducting a traffic stop when the 32-year-old driver of a Lincoln — identified as Darius Frye, who was allegedly involved in a domestic disturbance call at the Red Carpet Inn motel on Riverside Drive — accelerated onto Interstate 75 to try to flee officers.
“He later exited the interstate, jumped out of the vehicle, and into the Ocmulgee River,” the sheriff’s office said in a Facebook post.
He was last seen on a thermal device exiting the water and running into the woods, but deputies couldn’t find him, the sheriff’s office said.
“Warrants are being secured on the 32-year-old suspect on charges of fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer for a felony offense, obstruction of officers, and reckless driving,” deputies said in the Facebook post. “Additional charges may be pending.”
Frye had not been apprehended as of Monday afternoon, according to Chance Ambrose, representative of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
