Macon man shot by deputy was trying to attack officer with screwdriver, GBI says

The man who was shot and killed by a Bibb County deputy at a local convenience store was trying to attack the officer with a screwdriver, according to information released by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation Thursday.

Zachary Ward, a 28-year-old Macon resident, was pronounced dead at the scene of the altercation early Thursday morning, GBI said. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office previously said it was called to the area, at the Circle K on Chambers Road, because Ward was trying to force his way into the store and attack customers and the store clerk.

“A man, later identified as Ward, was described as acting in an erratic manner and was harassing customers,” GBI said in a news release. “When deputies arrived, they encountered Ward, who attempted to attack the deputy with a screwdriver. The deputy subsequently shot Ward.”

The GBI was investigating the incident. The BCSO Internal Affairs office also was conducting an investigation.

Investigators did not immediately release more information.
