Macon County Middle School teacher accused of aggravated assault. What we know
A teacher at Macon County Middle School was accused of stabbing someone and was arrested in April, according to documents given to The Telegraph on Tuesday, but the teacher remains employed at the school.
An officer with the Warner Robins Police Department arrested Lathonia Joiner, 52, in connection with a “domestic dispute” that occurred on April 13 in which the victim was stabbed, according to the incident report.
The victim was transported for medical care, the incident report said.
Additional information on the incident was not released to The Telegraph as the case is pending prosecution. She’s charged with aggravated assault, court records say.
Macon County superintendent responds
Johnathan Roberts, the Macon County School System’s superintendent, said in a statement to The Telegraph on Wednesday that the school system is aware of the accusation against Joiner, which arises “from a personal matter that occurred outside of the scope of her professional responsibilities with our district.”
“We recognize that Mrs. Joiner has not yet had the opportunity for her day in court, and as such, no conclusions should be drawn until due process is completed,” Roberts said. “We anticipate guidance from the (Georgia Professional Standards Commission) as this matter continues to unfold as well.”
Roberts said the school system doesn’t believe the incident poses a risk to the safety and well-being of the students at Macon County Middle School and “remains committed to maintaining a safe, supportive learning environment for all students and staff.”
Joiner’s attorneys, Floyd Buford and Ashley Deadwyler-Heuman, have not responded to requests for comment.
