Man sentenced to 15 years in prison for Jones County shooting death.
Two siblings were sentenced after admitting to involvement in a Jones County shooting that left one woman dead, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday.
Jeremy Butts pleaded guilty to one count of voluntary manslaughter Sunday, acknowledging he shot a gun toward a home on Nitrogen Road on May 16, 2021, killing Jada Simmons, the Jones County Sheriff’s Office said Sunday afternoon. He was sentenced to serve 15 years in prison, followed by five years on probation.
His sister, Cierra Butts, was charged with hindering apprehension but pleaded guilty to obstruction of an officer on Friday. She will serve six months in the Jones County Jail, followed by six months of probation.
Sister took brother to airport following shooting
The incident unfolded when Cierra Butts was involved in an altercation during a large gathering that took place on Nitrogen Road, near the Wilkinson County line, on May 16, 2021. Jeremy Butts fired shots toward the house during the incident, killing Simmons.
After the shooting, Cierra Butts purchased Jeremy Butts a plane ticket to El Paso, Texas, and took him to the airport. The U.S. Marshals arrested Jeremy Butts on May 18, 2021. He “has remained in custody since that time,” according to the Jones County Sheriff’s Office.
“The Jones County Sheriff’s Office is grateful to the agencies that assisted in this case and remains committed to pursuing justice for victims and their families,” they said.
