Macon woman remembers her ‘vibrant party girl’ sister after tragic death

Teasha Ariele Colbert was the first call her younger sister would make anytime she needed to get dolled up.

The 42-year-old woman, who was found dead near her east Macon home Thursday, was the go-to for a laugh, party and makeover, according to her younger sister Sandy Colbert, 41.

“She was the oldest, but she had the spirit of the youngest,” Sandy Colbert said, with a smile, hours after Teasha Colbert was pronounced dead. “She knew about makeup, lashes and nails, and she was into all the beauty trends.”

Teasha Colbert was allegedly killed and found dead in a trash can Thursday morning at a home in Sanford Arms Apartments, a small neighborhood behind CVS on Gray Highway and Shurling Drive, according to the Bibb County sheriff’s and coroner’s offices. She lived just houses away from the home where her body was found.

The sheriff’s office confirmed it’s investigating her death as a homicide.

“I just hate that my sister was found in a trash can because I don’t want nobody to remember her as trash,” Sandy Colbert said. “Like, my sister wasn’t trash.”

Teasha Colbert’s friends didn’t hear from her Thursday morning, so Sandy Colbert said she went to her apartment and saw her sister’s gray Toyota Camry parked near her unit. Her purse and water cup were still in the car.

“If it just would’ve been her purse, I probably wouldn’t have thought about it but my sister would not go anywhere without her cup. … So I kind of felt like something was wrong,” Sandy Colbert told The Telegraph.

She said she called 911 to report her sister as missing, and deputies found Teasha Colbert dead soon after. It was unclear how she died and deputies were searching for a suspect Friday.

Teasha Colbert protected people for a living as a security guard for Allied Universal, often at Tractor Supply. Her sister said she was valiant in and outside of work, and didn’t let conflicts intimidate her, which Sandy Colbert admired.

“She was a security guard, she just needed somebody to protect her,” Sandy Colbert said. “Nobody was there.”

The sisters were born just over a year apart in Forsyth and felt like twins, according to Sandy Colbert.

Teasha Colbert often teased Sandy into cooking elaborate meals.

“She would just always hype me up …,” Sandy Colbert said, laughing. “Sometimes she would just trick me like, ‘I bet you don’t know how to cook,’ and I’d be like, ‘Yes I do!’ and I’d fix her a plate.”

Teasha and Sandy Colbert were pretty opposite characters — Teasha was a care-free, party-goer, and Sandy is a laid-back, single mother of a 14-year-old daughter – but they got along like best friends.

“I’m like the old lady, but she was like the vibrant party girl,” Sandy Colbert said. “I just let Teasha be Teasha, and she’d let me be me.”

Teasha Colbert loved swimming at the beach in Savannah and gambling at casinos, Sandy Colbert said.

She brought the party wherever she went, and Sandy Colbert plans to do the same in her honor.

“My sister would want me to keep going and enjoying my life, and most importantly keep being a good mother,” Sandy Colbert said. “She loved my daughter dearly, I just got to keep pushing forward.”
