A suspect allegedly evading arrest was shot and killed by Houston County deputies Wednesday, according to Houston County Sheriff Matt Moulton.

The incident happened early Wednesday morning when officers tried to stop a vehicle that was reported stolen just after 2 a.m., Moulton said in a Facebook post.

When officers attempted to stop the car, two people inside fled from the vehicle on foot, Moulton said. A female was quickly apprehended, but a male suspect was found hiding nearby.

“As deputies attempted to take the male into custody, he fired a weapon at the deputies,” Moulton said on Facebook. “The deputies returned fire and struck the suspect.”

The person was taken to Emory Hospital in Warner Robins, where he later died, Moulton said.

No law enforcement officers were harmed, Moulton said.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting, Moulton said.

More information wasn’t immediately released about the man who died or the officers.
