A McDonough man was arrested after he allegedly shot two family members, fled from law enforcement and crashed into two patrol cars Sunday night, according to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Devours Sherten, 42, was wanted on allegations of aggravated assault in Henry County after he allegedly shot and injured his wife and stepdaughter, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release. Henry County officers previously asked surrounding agencies to be on the lookout for him, according to Anna Watkins, public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office.

Officers in Butts County recognized a vehicle occupied by Sherten and started chasing him, Watkins told The Telegraph.

Monroe deputies were dispatched to assist in the vehicle pursuit when the suspect entered Monroe County around 11:35 p.m. Sunday, Watkins said.

Sherten’s vehicle was just ahead of Monroe patrol cars on Highway 42 near Blount Road, Watkins said.

Deputies were preparing to force his vehicle to stop using a precision immobilization technique, in which an officer crashes into a suspect’s vehicle during a pursuit. Then Sherten hit his brakes.

“The guy suddenly slammed on his brakes right when we were about to PIT him, and that’s what caused him to crash into our vehicles,” Watkins told The Telegraph. “He probably knew it was about to happen.”

The sheriff’s office said he “rammed” two Monroe County patrol cars, according to a news release.

Sherten was arrested at the crash scene in Monroe County without further incident.

He was being held in the Monroe County Jail without bond.

Sherten was charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer, felony fleeing and attempting to elude law enforcement, and multiple traffic violations, the sheriff’s office said. He faced additional charges in Henry and Butts counties.
