Police shoot armed suspect in standoff, alleged family violence in Warner Robins
A cop shot and injured a man who allegedly first shot at officers near a Warner Robins home Sunday, according to local and state law enforcement agencies.
The suspect was allegedly involved in a family violence dispute before he started a fire and barricaded himself during a standoff with officers of the Warner Robins Police Department.
No officers were shot or injured, according to news releases from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Warner Robins Police Department.
The GBI identified Jesus Chavez-Ledesma, a 46-year-old Warner Robins man, as the suspect.
The standoff
A domestic violence incident with Chavez-Ledesma and multiple family members was reported to police early Sunday morning, according to WRPD.
The 46-year-old was listed as an offender, and multiple family members were considered victims in a news release.
Officers responded to the incident at a house in the 100 block of Louis Street just after 2:30 a.m. in Warner Robins, and found Chavez-Ledesma outside the home, the police department said.
“During the initial contacts” when police arrived, he allegedly fired a gun, the WRPD said.
He then “barricaded himself” in a small storage shed behind the house and “continued to shoot at the officers,” the GBI said.
Officers approached the shed and attempted to negotiate with him while “he set fire to the building he occupied and continued to shoot at the officers,” the GBI said. It was unclear if he lit a house or the shed on fire.
Police described it as a “standoff.”
A cop then shot the 46-year-old, according to the GBI and WRPD.
“Immediate aid” was given to him at the scene, officers said. Emory Health Care’s emergency medical services took him to a local regional hospital for treatment, where he was expected to survive.
It was unclear if Chavez-Ledesma faced charges by Monday afternoon.
The incident was being investigated as aggravated assault on law enforcement officers and domestic/family violence, officers said.
The police department performed a preliminary investigation Sunday, and the GBI was expected to continue investigating independently.
The Houston County District Attorney’s Office was expected to review the case once an investigation is complete, according to the GBI.
