18 inmates receive further charges relating to Bibb County Jail fight

Over a month after a fight at the Bibb County Jail that left a 22-year-old dead, the sheriff’s office announced Friday afternoon that 18 inmates face additional charges, including felony murder, relating to the incident.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation told Bibb County Sheriff’s Office investigators that their probe of the June 4 jail fight led to additional charges for 18 inmates, including Willie James Haugabrook III, 40, Brandon Carnell Willis, 19, Stacey Montez Mathews, 22, and Isiah Joshua Bailey, 22, who were injured.

The charges range from felony murder, after the fight led to the death of Breele Jaheim Johnson, 22, to possessing a prohibited item, referring to the “improvised weapon” the inmates used, according to Davis.

Mathews, Haugabrook, Bailey and Willis face felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a prohibited item charges on top of their previous charges.

These inmates have also been charged:

  • Gemon Chappell, 20, faces one count of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault and possession of a prohibited item.
  • Reheem Smith, 19, faces one count of felony murder, one count of aggravated assault and possession of a prohibited item.

“This was an appalling act of violence committed by a number of individuals who are accused of violent acts on our streets,” Davis said Friday. “This incident makes it clear that they can become just as violent in jail. We are grateful that all inmates involved in this incident are being held responsible.”
