A man was arrested after he allegedly burglarized a Macon high school in early June, the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office announced Thursday.

The main front entrance door was left unlocked on April 13, at Howard High School, 6400 Forsyth Road, Sgt. Christopher Williams said.

Robert Lee Adams, 57, entered through the door just before midnight, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office obtained by The Telegraph.

At least five deputies responded to the scene and entered through the unlocked door as well, the incident report said.

They stood inside for a moment “to decide on which way to start clearing the building,” then saw a man, later identified as Adams, in the cafeteria, the BCSO said.

Deputies ran down a hallway toward Adams, then he laid face-down on the floor when they approached him with pistols drawn briefly, according to body camera video on the sheriff’s office’s Instagram.

Security cameras showed Adams had allegedly attempted to steal “construction-related items” as renovations were underway at the school, Stephanie Hartley, chief communications officer of the Bibb County School District, told The Telegraph.

Adams was arrested at the scene, taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning, then transferred without incident on June 14 to the Bibb County Jail, deputies said.

He was charged with second degree commercial burglary with non-forced entry, which is a felony, according to the incident report and a detainee log.

His bond was set for $6,000 and he was still incarcerated Friday afternoon.

Deputy Chief of Bibb County Campus Police Latricia Gittens responded to the scene after Adams’ arrest.

No one was injured, according to Williams.
