A Macon man who fatally shot his girlfriend’s father pleaded guilty to the charges against him and was sentenced to 25 years in prison as a result, according to prosecutors with the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.

Terrance Williams, 28, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony on Tuesday, which stems from an argument that he had with his girlfriend’s father, Eddie Thomas, 42, on Feb. 5, 2022. The altercation led Williams to fatally shoot Thomas, prosecutors said.

Williams had argued with his girlfriend that day and Thomas drove to the residence to pick her up, according to prosecutors.

“When Thomas left the residence, Williams followed him outside and shot him multiple times,” according to prosecutors.

Thomas sustained gunshot wounds to his legs and stomach and“died approximately 36 days later due to complications from his injuries,” prosecutors said.

Though Williams was initially charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony, “the malice murder charge was reduced to voluntary manslaughter as a condition of Williams for taking accountability for the incident,” prosecutors said.

District Attorney Anita Howard commended Williams’ accountability in the case, saying that it’s an important step toward justice for the Thomas family and the community.

“While nothing can bring back Eddie Thomas or undo the pain his family has endured, Williams’ acknowledgment of his guilt spares the family the trauma of a lengthy trial and demonstrates that he understands the gravity of what he did,” Howard said. “This 25-year sentence reflects both the seriousness of taking a life and the mitigating circumstances that led to this tragic confrontation.”
