One dead, one arrested in car chase that led to crash, Monroe County officials say
A man died in a crash that happened after Monroe County deputies attempted a traffic stop that led to a chase Wednesday night. The driver sped off and crashed into a tree, killing his passenger.
The attempted stop was made around 11:30 p.m. as the car was southbound on Interstate 75 near exit 188, deputies said. The driver fled and police gave chase. The chase continued onto Highway 18 West, where the driver lost control and hit a tree.
The passenger, Jason King, 22, of Americus, was killed instantly, according to a statement from the sheriff’s office.
The driver, also from Americus, is a minor whose name was not released. The sheriff’s office said he was apprehended around 7:30 Thursday morning. He will be charged with felony fleeing, felony murder and multiple traffic violations.
Deputies found a gun and drugs in the vehicle, so additional charges are pending.
The case remained under investigation Thursday afternoon.
