Human skeleton found near major highway in Peach County, coroner says
A human skeleton was found in Peach County Tuesday afternoon, according to the Peach County Coroner’s Office.
An employee with the Georgia Department of Transportation was working on the side of northbound Interstate 75 when he discovered bones about 60 feet away from the road, Coroner Kerry Rooks told The Telegraph.
“Just nothing but a skeleton,” Rooks said.
GDOT workers were looking to cut “some thick brush by a gutter... and that’s when they found it,” Rooks said.
An employee called 911 to report the discovery around 1:30 p.m. between mile markers 150 and 151, just before the Peach and Crawford county line.
The human remains appeared to have “been there for a long time, months at least,” Rooks said.
Investigators have not yet identified the person by Wednesday afternoon. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is expected to perform an autopsy on Friday to determine a cause of the death, according to Rooks.
The Peach County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately respond to The Telegraph’s request for comment.
