Man at Macon jail hospitalized after hot water thrown in his face. What we know.
A man detained at the Bibb County Jail has been hospitalized after others at the jail threw hot water in his face, Bibb County deputies said Tuesday.
A 21-year-old told deputies Saturday that he was injured by other detainees at the jail, which led deputies to discover that someone threw hot water through the victim’s cell door, deputies with the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office said. The victim was identified as Romario Justin Casey, who was booked in the jail on terroristic threat charges, according to the sheriff’s office’s inmate search.
The assault occurred on April 15, the sheriff’s office said.
Between April 15 and Saturday, “the inmate did not report and hid his injuries from deputies during block check,” the sheriff’s office said.
The inmate was taken to the medical unit to be treated before being transported to a hospital, where he was in stable condition, deputies said. Investigators were working Tuesday to identify who was involved in this incident. The victim’s name and charges were not known as of the time of this publication.
The sheriff’s office confirmed the announcement Tuesday involved the same incident that was referenced in a Facebook post from Lemuel Brown, the president of the Macon chapter of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference. That post showed a picture of someone at the jail with burn wounds on his face.
In the post, Brown urged family members to check in on their loved ones housed at the jail.
Stanley Stewart, District 3 Bibb County commissioner, commented on the post to say he will be pushing for a new jail “for the safety of the inmates, for the safety of the workers and, above all, the safety of the overall community.”
“I ask for the community to come and voice your ideas to us on the commission and to the mayor,” Stewart said under the post.
Mayor Lester Miller also acknowledged the situation underneath the Facebook post.
