Man stabs Milledgeville cop, then officer shoots him, GBI says
A Milledgeville Police Department officer shot a man after the man stabbed a cop Saturday, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation announced Sunday.
The Milledgeville Police Department and emergency medical services were called to the home because Ali Rasheed Washington, the Milledgeville man who allegedly stabbed an officer, needed medical assistance, the GBI said in a news release Sunday.
The 34-year-old’s parents called 911 around 9:15 p.m. Saturday, at a home in the 100 block of Moore Street in Milledgeville Estates Mobile Home Park, which sits off of U.S. Route 441, according to a Facebook post by police.
Two officers entered the home and gathered information from family members about the medical request, then Washington allegedly “charged (at) officers with a knife and stabbed one of the officers multiple times,” the police department said on Facebook.
The other officer allegedly fired two gunshots at Washington. The officer was placed on administrative leave, according to Mary Chandler, the GBI’s special agent in charge.
Washington and the officer were taken to local hospitals and both were listed in stable condition Sunday morning, police said.
The officer was later released from the hospital Sunday. Washington was expected to be booked into the Baldwin County Sheriff’s Office when he left the hospital, the GBI said.
Washington is expected to face charges related to the alleged stabbing including aggravated assault against a police officer and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime, according to the GBI.
Police Chief Dray Swicord has asked the GBI to take over the investigation, which will be reviewed by the Ocmulgee District Attorney’s Office when it is completed.
The police department did not respond to The Telegraph’s request for comment.
