Monroe County jail officer arrested, charged with sexual assault. What we know.
A man working for the Monroe County was arrested after the sheriff’s office was alerted to an alleged inappropriate relationship with the jail officer had with a woman detained at the jail, officials said Friday.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office announced the news after finding out Tuesday about a “possible inappropriate relationship between a male jail officer and a female inmate,” the sheriff’s office said.
An investigation was started by the sheriff’s office criminal investigation division, and it led to the arrest of 22-year-old jail officer Chandler Sheffield. He’s charged with sexual assault of a person while in custody and violating his oath of office, officials said.
Sheffield worked for the sheriff’s office since November 2023 but was fired over the incident.
Officials said Friday that the case would be handled “with the same diligence and commitment to justice as any other.”
“I hope that the public will see this incident for what it is,” said Anna Watkins, public information officer for the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office. “An isolated, poor, individual decision that does not define the dedicated officers of our office.”
