Macon man convicted of murdering his wife of only a month. He’ll serve life in prison
A man will serve life in prison after a Bibb County jury convicted him of murdering his wife, whom he was married to for 30 days, the Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s office said Friday.
The jury deliberated for only an hour Thursday afternoon in the murder case of Idris Oladipo Alaka, 37. He was found guilty of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and possession of a knife during the commission of a felony. Court records show that in 2022 Alaka stabbed Brittany Wright, his wife of 30 days. The fatal incident happened at their home on Courtland Avenue. She was 27.
Alaka will not have the possibility of parole, and his sentence includes an additional five years on top of life “for the brutal murder,” prosecutors said.
Wright’s baby was present during the attack, prosecutors said.
“This was a heinous act of domestic violence that took the life of a young mother and traumatized others,” District Attorney Anita Howard said. “Witness testimony is essential in our ability to hold people accountable for breaking the law. The swift verdict delivered by the jury sends a clear message that such brutal violence will not be tolerated in our community.”
Alaka grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed Wright 26 times, according to evidence presented by prosecutors during the trial. During the incident, two people, who were renting a bedroom in the same residence, testified that they heard disturbances and saw Alaka attacking Wright.
One of the witnesses was able to remove the baby, then sought help, prosecutors said.
The witnesses then encountered a law enforcement officer down the street responding to an unrelated call. They brought the officer inside the residence, where they found Wright dead and Alaka covered in blood.
Officers were able to find the murder weapon, which Alaka had attempted to hide, prosecutors said.
Upon questioning, Alaka claimed that intruders broke into their home and attacked his wife. But forensic evidence revealed that it was only Wright’s and Alaka’s blood on the knife, and there was no evidence that any intruders had broken into their residence.
