Hospital patient steals ambulance, gets arrested after police chase in Warner Robins.
A medical patient stole an ambulance from a local hospital in Houston County Wednesday morning, according to the Warner Robins Police Department.
The Houston 911 Center notified police about a Houston Healthcare ambulance leaving Middle Flint Health and Wellness, a mental health facility on State Road 96, “at a high rate of speed ... driving recklessly” around 8:30 a.m., a news release from the police department said.
Officers attempted to catch up to the ambulance traveling east on Feagin Mill Road near Feagin Mill Middle School. The driver turned the ambulance north onto N. Houston Lake Road toward Russell Parkway, police said.
“The driver then drove the vehicle through the open field and into a ditch causing significant damage to the ambulance,” police said.
The driver kept going east on Russell Parkway when deputies with the Houston County Sheriff’s Office took over and chased him, police said.
They took another turn and stopped on Carl Vinson Parkway, where deputies detained the driver, police said.
No injuries were reported. The police department said the suspect was a 29-year-old man, but didn’t release further details.
Officers urged anyone with tips about the situation to call the police department at 478-302-5378, or Macon Regional Crimestoppers.
