Gang unit arrests suspect week after altercation leaves man critically injured in Macon
A man was arrested a week after he allegedly left a victim with a severe head injury in a Macon neighborhood, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
The 45-year-old suspect, Akbar Mohammed Harclerode of Macon, allegedly left the scene of the altercation, then attempted to flee from deputies, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office Thursday.
Witnesses reported to deputies “an altercation” occurred between two men around 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 16 on Gledhill Street and Willow Lane, near Columbus Road, the news release said.
Deputies responded and found a man “unresponsive laying on the ground suffering from a head injury,” the sheriff’s office said.
Paramedics took the victim to a medical facility where he was listed in critical condition, deputies said.
Video footage showed a gray vehicle fleeing the scene at the time. That vehicle was spotted Thursday near Berkener and Bailey avenues – a few blocks away from where the altercation occurred, deputies said.
The sheriff’s office gang unit attempted pull over the vehicle, “but the driver refused to stop,” deputies said.
Harclerode eventually “abandoned his vehicle... (led deputies on) a brief foot pursuit” before they caught and detained him, according to the sheriff’s office.
He was taken to Investigations Headquarters, then the Bibb County Law Enforcement Center where he was held without bond, the sheriff’s office said.
Harclerode was charged with aggravated assault and aggravated battery.
