Former mayoral candidate Shekita Maxwell was arrested Tuesday for allegedly assaulting a family member, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Maxwell was in custody Wednesday and charged with battery against a family member, according to the sheriff’s office. She was also charged with false imprisonment, hindering a 911 call and a probation violation, according to the sheriff’s office.

An incident report from the sheriff’s office says that on June 24 around 10 p.m., deputies responded to a call on Atwood Drive and found a victim who had a “visible injury to her head above her right eye that had been bleeding” after an alleged assault by Maxwell, according to the incident report. The dispute allegedly started around 8 p.m. and Maxwell dragged the victim around the house by her hair for about 30 minutes.

Maxwell is also accused of slamming the victim’s head into the toilet several times, the incident report said. The incident report said Maxwell threw the victim’s phone into the yard so that she could not call for law enforcement or emergency assistance.

Both Maxwell and the victim were the only two people in the home at the time, according to the incident report. Another person at the home, who wasn’t there at the time of the incident, said Maxwell “had been having issues over the past several months and as part of a court order Shekita Maxwell is supposed to be getting counseling for her anger issues,” according to the incident report.

Former Macon candidate’s lawsuit over election

Maxwell had filed a lawsuit against Mayor Lester Miller and the Macon-Bibb County Board of Elections, alleging the May 21 primary election was compromised by Miller and “co-conspirators.” She has asked a judge to dismiss the results of the election. Miller decisevely defeated Maxwell, winning about 80% of the vote.

Bibb County judges recused themselves from the case and asked Administrative Judge James Sizemore Jr. to appoint another judge from outside the district to oversee the case.

Sizemore appointed Senior Judge Richard Winegarden of Gwinett County. Winegarden scheduled a hearing for Maxwell’s injunction request for Aug. 7.
