Counterfeit $50 and $100 bills found in Bibb are hard to spot
The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office wants to alert people to examine any $50 or $100 bills they may receive, according to a sheriff’s office news release.
The release said that counterfeiters are using bleach to turn $5 bills into fake $50 and $100 bills, and that several have turned up throughout Bibb County.
Because they are printed on $5 bills, most of the indicator pens used to check the bills don’t work, the release said. People are urged to check for a hologram of Ulysses S. Grant on the right side of the $50s, or the hologram of Ben Franklin on the $100s by holding them to the light. Also, people can examine the security strips, which ought to read “USA 50” or “USA 100” if the bills are genuine.
Also, people should check for the $50 serial number IL7485193A on a 2005 series bill, and $100 serial numbers of HK37138019 and HB34286301R on 2006 bills. Those numbers are counterfeit.
Anyone who discovers a counterfeit bill should call the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at (478) 746-9441.
