Suspect in a stolen vehicle shoots at Bibb County deputy, who then returns fire

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia Bureau of Investigation are investigating an officer-involved shooting Monday morning that left one suspect wounded.

The shooting occurred just after 11 a.m. in the 800 block of West Grenada Terrace off Houston Avenue in South Macon.

A Bibb County Sheriff’s Office deputy attempted to stop what was reported to be a stolen vehicle seen on West Grenada Terrace, according to a news release.

During the investigation, the occupants in the car attempted to flee the vehicle. Deputies made contact with them and one person fired shots at the deputies. The deputies returned fire and struck the armed suspect. Deputies then applied a tourniquet to the person who was struck.

Paramedics responded to the scene and immediately treated the suspect for his wound. He was transported to a local hospital. The subject is listed in stable condition. No one else was injured during this incident.

The names of the deputies involved were not released, and the suspect who was wounded was not identified.

Sheriff David Davis said three suspects were taken in for questioning. It was not immediately known whether any of the suspects involved were teenagers.

“As far as the ages and all, I don’t want to confirm any of that,” Davis said at the scene. “They were younger individuals. One of the occupants ran to one of the apartments just behind where the vehicle stop happened. And there were some individuals in that particular apartment that have been taken in for questioning. There have not been any charges brought in that regard to those individuals at this time, but they are being questioned as to what’s going on.”

GBI was called in by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the shooting incident. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Office will conduct an internal investigation.
