A Macon man walking along Riverside Drive was struck and killed Thursday afternoon in a hit-and-run collision.

The man, identified by Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones as Freddie Evans, 67, was reportedly standing in the center turn lane in the 1000 block of Riverside Drive, which runs between Franklin and Hill streets, when he was hit by a dark-colored SUV.

The driver of the SUV, which police said is possibly a Chevy Tahoe with front-end damage, did not stop, continuing north on Riverside.

Evans was taken to a local hospital, where staff pronounced him dead.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal pedestrian traffic collision that occurred just before 8:30 p.m., in the 1000 block of Riverside Drive.

Pedestrian fatalities in Macon, particularly on state roads and highways with few or no sidewalks and poor lighting, are not uncommon. Late last month, Christopher Antwan Williams Jr., 23, was hit and killed while walking along Hawkinsville Road.

The traffic collision is still under investigation. Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Bibb Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500.
