Name of Crisp County deputy killed in shooting released, suspect identified
Monroe County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man wanted in the fatal shooting of a Crisp County deputy after a chase on Interstate 475 early Wednesday morning.
Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman said deputies caught the man, later identified as Croshawn Cross, 25, from Unadilla at about 4 a.m. on I-475 near Zebulon Road after he led police on a chase through several Georgia counties.
Cross was driving a sheriff’s office patrol car stolen from Crisp County, where just 20 minutes prior he fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy, according to a Facebook post from the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.
At about 3:40 a.m., a Crisp County deputy later identified as Tyeee Brown, 26, pulled over a car and ran its plates, according to the Facebook post. The deputy learned the car was stolen and that the driver, Cross, was wanted for “numerous burglaries,” according to a video from Crisp County.
When Browne approached the car, Cross allegedly shot him and stole his patrol car before leading police on the chase, the post said. The deputy later died from his injuries at a local hospital. A later GBI statement also said that other deputies shot at Cross as he fled the scene.
Freeman told the Telegraph that Cross left the Monroe County Detention Center at about 7 a.m. Wednesday to be sent back to Crisp County.
Cross was charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and carjacking, among other charges, according to the statement. The GBI will investigate the shooting.
