Macon woman hit by a car, killed while trying to cross Shurling Drive

A Macon woman died early Sunday morning when she was hit by a car while pushing a shopping cart in east Macon, officials said.

Janet Virginia Green Towels, 82, was crossing the street at the intersection of Shurling Drive and Pinehill Drive at about 12:30 a.m Sunday when a car hit her, according to a statement from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Towels died at the scene, Bibb deputy coroner Lonnie Miley said. Her next of kin were notified.

No one else was injured in the collision, the statement said. The driver remained at the scene after the collision, the Bibb sheriff’s office said.
