Bruce Elementary School in Macon went into a brief lockdown yesterday after a 24-year-old man was shot less than a quarter mile away from school grounds, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Several shots were fired just before 11:30 am on Ormond Terrace and one struck the man in the leg. He was transported to a local hospital where he remains in stable condition.

Soon after the shots were fired, BSO contacted Bruce Elementary. The school went into a precautionary lockdown at the request of law enforcement until the area could be cleared by deputies.

“A precautionary lockdown means we continue to move about in the building as normal, but remain indoors. Also, several Campus Police officers are on site with us now for additional safety purposes,” according to a statement sent to parents by Bibb County schools when lockdown was initiated.

The same statement from Bibb County said that several students were outside taking a break from testing when they heard the gunfire. Students were immediately brought inside by teachers and those visibly upset by the incident were given the opportunity to speak with the school counselor.

The lockdown was lifted after deputies deemed the area safe. Students stayed on school grounds but remained indoors for the rest of the school day.

The shot 24-year-old was deemed a person of interest by deputies after he was caught on Villa Estas Avenue running from the scene. Because of his injury he was not arrested and taken to a nearby hospital.

This is an ongoing investigation. The Macon Telegraph will update this story as more information becomes available.
