A man died in a hit-and-run accident after trying to walk across the Interstate 16 and Interstate 75 interchange in Macon early Wednesday, officials said.

The man, whose age and name were not released, was walking in the westbound lanes of I-16 where it meets I-75 northbound near downtown Macon when he was hit by a car at about 2:15 a.m., according to a statement from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

The man died at the scene, Bibb deputy coroner Lonnie Miley said. His next of kin had not been notified yet as of Wednesday morning.

It was unclear in the statement why the man was crossing the interstate, or whether he was from Macon. The driver that hit him left the scene and has not been identified.

The Telegraph will update this story when more information is available.
