Macon cops hunt killer in lunch-hour shooting outside Mrs. Winner’s fried chicken eatery

A 60-year-old Dublin man was shot to death while he sat in the driver’s seat of a work truck Tuesday afternoon by someone who apparently walked up as the driver was about to pull away from a Macon fried chicken eatery, officials said.

No motive was known in the 12:07 p.m. incident.

The shooting happened in front of the Mrs. Winner’s restaurant at 2419 Pio Nono Ave., just north of Eisenhower Parkway.

Bibb County sheriff’s officials said in a statement that when deputies showed up they found the victim in the driver’s seat. The truck, a Ford Super Duty, bore markings for the Altec company.

Coroner Leon Jones later identified the victim as Robert Clayton Wells. Jones said Wells, who was pronounced dead at a local hospital about half an hour after the shooting, had been shot once in the chest.

The suspect, said to have worn dark clothing, ran into some woods behind the restaurant.
