Police investigating Friday night shooting, car crash that left one dead

A man was shot and killed Friday night on Broadway in south Macon, officials said, marking the county’s first homicide of 2023.

The shooting, which also led to a car crash, occurred at about 8:30 p.m. Friday night when there were gunshots around the 2800 block of Broadway, according to a statement from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

Monquencio Johnson, 26, was driving a Honda Accord and turning onto Broadway from Spikes Street when he was hit by the gunshots. He lost control of the car and crashed into a telephone pole and parked truck, according to the statement.

Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene and next of kin were notified.

An officer at the scene reported “several bullet holes” in the car, according to an incident report from the sheriff’s office. The report also mentions a rifle in the front seat of the car next to Johnson that was taken into evidence.

The shooting comes just after an investigation of a death on Merriwood Drive Tuesday that was determined to be a suicide.
