Man shot and killed on neighborhood street near National Guard outpost in northeast Macon

A 23-year-old man was shot and killed Thursday night in an east Macon neighborhood off Shurling Drive.

The slain man, Jermaine Brandon Reynolds, was found mortally wounded shortly after 8:30 p.m. near the intersection of Denton Street and Haywood Road, officials said.

Further details of the shooting were not immediately clear.

The area where Reynolds died lies just north of Shurling Drive and the Georgia Army National Guard Readiness Center on Kitchens Road.

According to a statement from Bibb County sheriff’s officials, deputies who answered a call about a person shot found Reynolds “unresponsive (and) lying in the road.”

His slaying was Macon’s fourth in the past five days and followed a weekend that saw three victims fatally shot in separate episodes.

Reynolds’ death is the county’s 51st homicide of 2022 and comes amid a troubling three-year span that has seen at least 51 people slain here each year.

Since Jan. 20, 2020 — the day of the first slaying that year — there have been 156 victims of homicide in Bibb County.
