A man walking along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard on the south side of downtown Macon was killed by a hit-and-run driver shortly before dawn Thursday, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said.

The man was struck at about 6:30 a.m. near the Dollar General store just north of Edgewood Avenue and the Houston Avenue split.

Officials said in a statement that the victim, whose name was not immediately made available, was hit “by an unknown vehicle that had fled.”

The statement further noted that two other motorists who were behind the car that hit the man “were also involved in the collision” but they stopped at the scene.
