Body found in woods behind Chambers Road near homeless camp in Macon

A man’s body was found in the woods near Chambers Road in Macon Tuesday afternoon, officials said.

The body of a white male was found around 3 p.m. behind the 4400 block of Chambers Road near a homeless camp close to the Walmart on Harrison Road, according to Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones.

The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and local EMS services responded, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene and has not yet been identified.

Jones said there were signs of trauma, though the cause of death is unknown. Jones also said the body may have been found as early as Monday by another person in the area and that the man is believed to have been unhoused.

Bibb County Sheriff’s office is investigating the death and scheduling an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
