UPDATE: Bibb gang unit deputies injured after attempting to stop suspects

Deputies from Bibb County gang unit were injured Monday afternoon after pursuing suspects near SR-74 in West Bibb County, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

At 2:45 p.m., two undercover gang unit investigators were in unmarked vehicles following suspects down Thomaston Road, according to Sgt. Clay Williams. When the investigators reached the roundabout at Lamar Road, they activated their emergency lights and sirens.

The suspects then leaned out of the vehicle and began firing shots at the officers.

The officers crashed into a pole attempting to evade the shots and were later taken to Atrium Health with non-life threatening injuries. Neither deputy sustained any gunshot wounds. The suspects proceeded to flee down Lamar Road towards Zebulon Road, according to the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.

No one else was injured during the incident. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Office, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol are now searching for the suspects along SR-74.

“We are searching for a dark gray Dodge Charger with blacked out rear lights and dark tint,” Williams said.

Police were seen searching near Hunters Run apartments off of Thomaston Road around 4:15 p.m. but have no further information on the suspects as of 5:30 p.m.
