Hunt underway for clues in late-night hit-and-run death of 65-year-old Macon man

Investigators were searching for clues Tuesday in the apparent hit-and-run death of a man who was walking along Mercer University Drive on Monday night.

The man, 65, was struck by an “unknown” automobile just before 11 p.m. near Mercer’s intersection with Burton Avenue, about a quarter-mile west of Henderson Stadium, Bibb County sheriff’s officials said in a statement.

The victim, Larry Simmons, was pronounced dead about half an hour later at a local hospital.

The statement said sheriff’s deputies answered “a call of a person down on Mercer University Drive ... at around 10:54p.m.”

Authorities asked anyone with information about the incident to call the sheriff’s office at 478-751-7500.

Simmons had, according to public records, lived in the Dempsey Avenue area off Mercer, a few blocks from where he was struck.
