Two men shot and killed in car parked outside east Macon gas mart Sunday night

Two men were shot and killed Sunday night in a car that was parked at an east Macon gas mart, police said.

The shooting happened at about 9:30 p.m. at the Quick Serve at 584 Emery Highway, which overlooks the highway at the intersection of Womack Street.

Bibb Coroner Leon Jones said the victims were Trey Marcellous Smith, 30, and Debarius Devonte Sanford, 27. Sheriff’s officials in a statement said both victims were found “unresponsive” in a car at the store. They were later pronounced dead at a downtown hospital.

It was not immediately clear what may have prompted the gunfire.

“The suspect,” the sheriff’s statement said, “is described as a medium-build male wearing dark color clothes with a mask and hood over his face. He was last seen running down Womack Street.”

The victims, Smith and Sanford, are the city’s eighth and ninth homicide victims of 2022.
