Macon woman, 59, may have been shot, mortally wounded while driving, coroner says

A 59-year-old Bibb County woman who was shot in her side the night of Oct. 9 may was driving in the area of Eisenhower Parkway and Fulton Mill Road when she was mortally wounded, officials said.

The woman, Harriet Patrick, who lived off Fulton Mill, was pronounced dead Wednesday morning at a Macon hospital, Bibb Coroner Leon Jones said.

The coroner said there was a bullet hole in the car Patrick was driving in an area west of Interstate 475. She apparently made it to her house and was taken to a hospital.

According to a statement from Bibb sheriff’s officials early Wednesday afternoon, the shooting was reported after someone called 911 shortly after 1 a.m. on Oct. 10.

The statement said that Patrick was “struck by gunfire in her vehicle” as she was heading west on Eisenhower. It was not immediately clear from the statement whether the gunshots came from inside or outside Patrick’s car.

On Feb. 10, 2022, 30-year-old Quteavis Quayshon Simmons was arrested and charged with murder in connection with Patrick’s death. He also had an unrelated bench warrant in a battery/family violence case. As of Feb. 11, he was being held at the Bibb County jail without bond.

Patrick’s death is believed to be the county’s 46th violent homicide and possibly the 38th such death that has or is likely to result in murder charges.
