Male suspect wounded after opening fire on Bibb County sheriff’s deputy, cops say
An unidentified male was shot by a Bibb County sheriff’s deputy early Sunday morning in downtown Macon after the suspect fired several shots at the deputy while he was running away.
The deputy was not hurt. The suspect was taken to a local hospital, where he is in stable condition, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office.
According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was making a late night business check and talking to an employee at about 1:47 a.m. outside of Late Night, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., when a male was seen running from the corner of Cherry Street and headed south on MLK.
A short time later, a second male rounded the corner, brandishing a handgun and chasing the first male. The armed male shot a couple of rounds into the air during the chase.
The deputy began chasing the armed suspect. The suspect then shot at the deputy as they ran toward the alley behind Mulberry Street, witnesses told the sheriff’s office. The deputy returned fire, striking the suspect, who was apprehended in the alley.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been called in by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office to investigate the shooting incident, which is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings. The Bibb County Sheriff’s Internal Affairs Office also will conduct an internal investigation.
The deputy will be placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of these investigations.
Anyone with information about this incident is urged to contact the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office at 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-877-68CRIME.
