Taser used on man riding scooter in downtown Macon. A gun fell from his pocket, cops say

It was going on 8:30 Wednesday night when cops in downtown Macon spotted a strange sight: A man cruising down a sidewalk on a moped-style scooter.

Bibb County sheriff’s deputies pulled over the scooter near the intersection of Spring Street and Riverside Drive.

According to a sheriff’s statement Thursday, the man driving the scooter gave the cops a fake name but later identified himself as Adam Obinna Mathis.

“While talking to Mathis, he attempted to drive off, but deputies were able to stop him,” the sheriff’s report noted. “After a short struggle, deputies Tased Mathis and were able to handcuff him.”

While Mathis tangled with the cops, a stolen Ruger .380 was said to have fallen out the sleeve of his coat.

Mathis, 32, also allegedly had with him a .357 Magnum and some methamphetamine.

He was jailed on gun and drug-possession charges along with other charges that included theft by receiving, driving on a sidewak and obstruction.
