GBI investigating officer-involved shooting after Twiggs County chase. Here’s more.
A Georgia State Patrol trooper shot at the driver of a vehicle that had sideswiped his unmarked patrol car, which sparked a chase Tuesday down Georgia highway 57 for half a mile.
J.T Ricketson with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that the trooper fired multiple rounds at the driver, hitting him in the hand or arm.
“The trooper gave chase. They ended up having a crash on 57 in the median,” Ricketson said in an interview with The Telegraph. “He got out. The trooper fired a number of rounds. I don’t have the exact round count.”
Ricketson said the other person was transported to Navicent Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries. The chase included multiple bumps between the two vehicles before they finally crashed.
The GBI is investigating both the car accident and the use of force by the trooper. They will do an accident reconstruction and bring in their drone to map out the area that it occurred in.
“I have got crime scene people out here. We have got agents out here doing interviews. There were a number of witnesses on the road that saw the contact between the vehicles,” Ricketson said. “We are conducting those interviews right now.”
Twiggs County borders Bibb County to the southeast.
The Telegraph will provide updates when they become available.
