Intruder shot, killed by Macon homeowner may have thought he was at his own house, cops say

A man shot by a Macon homeowner during an apparent break-in late last month died Sunday at a city hospital, officials said.

Authorities said the dead man, Kelvin Ryan Orr, 49, was critically wounded in the predawn hours of Dec. 29 at a house on Hillary Place in west Macon — possibly after mistaking the house he was shot at for his own residence, which sits across the street.

Bibb County Coroner Leon Jones said Orr had been in intensive-care in the weeks after the shooting.

A report of the 4:50 a.m. episode on the last Sunday of 2019 said Bibb sheriff’s deputies were sent to a call of a burglary in progress at 4246 Hillary Place, a block north of Mercer University Drive off Log Cabin Drive.

By the time deputies arrived they were informed that a person had been shot, which they discovered when they got there, finding Orr lying in the front yard, shot once in the chest and once in the abdomen.

According to the report, a man who lived at the house, Charles Louis Allen, 37, told officers he was in bed asleep when his wife shouted for help from the living room.

“He stated he grabbed his handgun that he keeps on the dresser and went to see what was going on in the living room,” the sheriff’s report notes.

“His wife told him that someone was trying to force their way in. He said he (opened) the front door and that the suspect pushed him saying ‘Open the damn door, get out of the way.’ Mr. Allen pushed the suspect back giving verbal commands to ‘get back.’ The suspect then charged at Mr. Allen and that is when Mr. Allen stated he fired 2-3 shots at the suspect.”

Allen’s wife, Alysha, 35, told deputies she was awakened by the sound of “a key noise” and a doorknob turning, the report added.

The report goes on to note that it appeared that Orr “may have been intoxicated and confused Mr. Allen’s home as his home. The suspect lives directly in front of Mr. Allen.”

No charges have been filed in the case.
