Macon man shot after gunfire erupts during ‘physical altercation’ in historic neighborhood

A man was shot in the leg Sunday evening in what the authorities described as “a physical altercation” in one of Macon’s oldest neighborhoods, which sits down a hill from historic Fort Hawkins and just east of the Macon Coliseum.

Details of the 5 p.m. fight were scant Monday.

The wounded man, Marcus Robinson, 39, was said to have been at an apartment in the Davis Homes community along Main Street south of Emery Highway when a fight broke out near the corner of Applewood and Leaf streets.

“During the altercation, (an) unknown suspect began shooting,” a Bibb County sheriff’s statement said.

Robinson, shot in his right leg, was driven to a downtown hospital by a friend. His wound was not thought to be life-threatening.

Asked Monday what may have prompted the gunfire, sheriff’s spokesman Sgt. Clay Williams said investigators were “still looking at that.”

The area where the shooting happened lies just northwest of the Ocmulgee National Monument.
