Gunman shouts, ‘Police!’ and shoots man dead in his bed where child was sleeping

A young father was in bed with his child when he was fatally shot in the head early Tuesday.

Casey Harvey, 25, was asleep when someone started banging on the door just after 6 a.m. at unit B-3 at Rockland Apartments at 2295 Recreation Road in Macon.

The gunman yelled, “Police!” and kicked in the door of the upstairs apartment where Harvey, his girlfriend and three children were sleeping, deputies said.

A neighbor who arrived at the apartment shortly after the shooting said the gunman first approached the girlfriend, then went to another bedroom where Harvey was sleeping and shot him at least once.

A Medical Center, Navicent Health, EMS pronounced him dead inside the building.

Wails and sobs followed the news that Harvey was dead as his relatives and the girlfriend’s family arrived at the apartments.

Bibb County sheriff’s deputies guarded the scene as crime lab technicians gathered evidence.

As Harvey’s body was removed, emotions ran high and tensions escalated between families of the victim and his girlfriend, deputies said.

Officers were able to diffuse the situation, but one woman was overcome and collapsed. An ambulance was called, and she was taken to the hospital.

Bibb County deputy coroners Lonnie and Ronnie Miley also responded to confirm the death.

No one is in custody, but investigators are following leads.

In August of 2014, Milton Stephens Jr. was fatally shot once in the chest while at his front door of building K-3 at Rockland Apartments.

His killer has never been caught.

Anyone with information in either case is urged to call 478-751-7500 or Macon Regional Crimestoppers at 877-68-CRIME.
