Midstate stores, home searched in gambling raid

Three Bibb County convenience stores and a home were raided Tuesday as authorities served search warrants for alleged commercial gambling violations, according to a GBI news release.

During the searches, agents collected evidence and seized assets allegedly gained from the illegal use of gaming machines.

An investigation reportedly has shown customers have illegally been paid cash winnings. In Georgia, winnings can only be paid for store merchandise, gas or lottery tickets.

Locations raided include:

▪  Shell Food Mart, 2700 Riverside Drive, Macon

▪  Poplar Mart, 565 Poplar St., Macon

▪  Lizella Supermarket, 3309 Holley Road, Macon

Multiple arrests are pending, according to the news release.

A press conference is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday.

Members of the GBI’s commercial gambling unit and Bibb County Sheriff’s Office participated in the raid in cooperation with the Georgia Lottery Corporation, Georgia Department of Revenue and Macon Judicial Circuit District Attorney’s Office.
