A downtown bar and the restaurant below it were cordoned off by crime scene tape early Tuesday as FBI agents swarmed in on the college town businesses.

IRS agents also were there on South Wayne Street at Chops restaurant and Capital City bar, FBI spokesman Stephen Emmett said in an email to The Telegraph.

Similar raids also took place in Valdosta, Tifton and Statesboro, among other places, in what Emmett described as an ongoing federal investigation, “the details of which I cannot discuss at this time.”

The Union Recorder reported the Ocmulgee Drug Task Force also was present. Officials were seen loading boxes of items into dark colored SUVs, according to a report from WGXA-TV.

By 3 p.m., investigators were gone, and a single orange cone blocked the bar’s front door.

The Telegraph sought potential records of past incidents there from the Milledgeville Police Department, but attempts to reach its spokeswoman were unsuccessful.
