The crowd at the Challenger game between Warner Robins and Viera Suntree from Melbourne, Florida, on Saturday morning was as big as it has been for any game at the Southeastern Regional Little League softball tournament, and it was probably a bit louder at times.

No one really cared about the score in the game that featured two teams with special-needs players between the ages of 5 and 20, and although some great defensive plays were made, everyone was safe and everyone scored.

It was just the kind of morning that left everyone smiling, from the fans to the volunteers, but most of all, to the players.

“I was nervous the first time I got to bat because there were so many people here and I just wanted to do well,” said Hannah Shepherd, 17, who got over her nerves to rip two balls into the outfield. “It was the first time I have ever played on this field and I loved every minute of it.”

Nathan Burke, who attends Houston County High School, also had a great game as the catcher for Warner Robins and had two hits. At times, Burke was almost hesitant when he tagged runners out at home. “It’s really about having fun and meeting new people,” Burke said. “I have played in a lot of baseball games in my life and it is definitely my favorite sport. I just really love playing it.”

Burke may love baseball, but was quick to point out that he has other obligations for the day after his baseball game. “I have to go to karate class!” said Burke with a huge smile.

The Challenger game allows players from the Southeastern Regional to be on the field while the game is being played, and they assist with base running, catching and throwing but most of all with unlimited high fives. “I loved every minute of it,” said Georgia catcher Megan Sharpe, who had a game against West Virginia to think of later in the day. “It helps us all realize how fortunate we are, and all the players are so cool to be around that it makes it a great event. Plus, while we’re on the field we actually get to talk to some of the players from the other Little League teams without thinking that we have to compete with them.”

Peyton Bradford was another stalwart on the Warner Robins team, playing excellent defense as well as hitting the ball hard every time up. “I loved being out here with all my friends,” Bradford said. “The people in the stands were just amazing and I wasn’t nervous, but I just wanted to have a good game.”
