Perry native recognized by Navy
Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Datarius Williams, a Perry native, was selected as the Blue Jacket of the Quarter for the second quarter of 2016 by Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic in Norfolk, Virginia.
The Blue Jacket of the Quarter award is part of a program established in the interest of recognizing superior performance of enlisted personnel with emphasis on outstanding achievements, exemplary personal conduct and military bearing, and demonstrated initiative in the performance of duty. In addition to recognizing outstanding performance, the program motivates personnel to strive for improvement in their assigned duties, military behavior, appearance, and leadership.
“Although I am very early in my career, I feel like I am definitely taking steps in the right direction and being selected as the command’s Blue Jacket of the Quarter is just the start,” said Williams, a 2012 graduate of Perry High School, who is currently serving as the regional watch assistant at Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Current and Future Operations department. “The endless support and sacrifices of my family have certainly helped me to stay focused.”
As the Senior Officer Present Afloat admin coordinator, Williams oversaw assignments throughout Hampton Roads and New England. Additionally he recorded and categorized a situational report tracking matrix catalog, greatly increasing proficiency within the regional operation center for tracking situational reports.
“Congratulations to (Airman) Williams for his selection as Blue Jacket of the Quarter,” Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Rear Adm. Jack Scorby said. “(Williams) continues to represent the many highly dedicated professionals who ensure the success of Navy Region Mid-Atlantic.”
Williams, who has been in the Navy for 18 months, is currently enrolled in online courses at Saint Leo University, pursuing a degree in social work and psychology. His mother and father, Roberta and Quentin Askin, reside in Perry.
Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic is regional coordinator for all shore-based naval personnel and shore activities in the mid-Atlantic region, encompassing 20 states, 14 installations, 50 naval operational support centers, and 168 special areas.
As the naval shore installation management headquarters for the mid-Atlantic region, Commander, Navy Region Mid-Atlantic provides coordination of base operating support functions for operating forces throughout the region in support of the Fleet, Fighter, and Family.
