KENT: Character, expertise led to choice for new Demons coach
It is a new day in Demon Country.
Mike Chastain has been hired to be the 11th football head coach in Warner Robins High School history. Along with his duties with football, Chastain is the athletic director.
Chastain, a native of Warner Robins, played college ball at West Georgia University, where he also started off his coaching career as a student assistant in 1998. He has coached at several Middle Georgia schools in various assistant positions -- strength and conditioning, quarterbacks, offensive line, tight ends and offensive coordinator.
Chastain started work at Warner Robins High the day after he was named coach by the Board of Education on Feb. 9.
Steve Monday, principal of Warner Robins High, said he was led to hire Chastain for a number of reasons.
"His expertise in football, his wide variety of experiences and also the high recommendations from his previous coaches," Monday said. "He is also a big relationship person and wants to influence and display high character that our kids can emulate on the field and in the classroom. That character will come out in how they play."
Chastain is married to the former Carrie Wilkins, also from Warner Robins. They have three children, Eli, Kylie and Rex. The family attends Southside Baptist Church.
The Warner Robins High School Touchdown Club is hosting an event to let Demons fans meet Chastain and his family.
"We are thrilled to have a coach with the caliber that coach Chastain has," said Terry Price, president of the club. "He has a history of being involved in winning football programs that have made state playoff appearances. He is a dedicated Christian who has a heart for not only teaching young people the game of football but impacting their lives in a positive way on and off the field."
The community is invited to meet the Chastain family 6:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the lunchroom at Warner Robins High.
