BUZZELL: Much going on in Warner Robins' arts, cultural communities

There has been a change of date for the next Warner Robins Community Concert Association performance featuring the Mid-Town Brass Quintet. The concert will be Jan. 31 at 3 p.m. at First United Methodist Church, which is at 205 North Davis Drive in Warner Robins.

The quintet includes top professional musicians who have experience performing with the Atlanta Symphony, Atlanta Opera and several regional groups. The program will include Firedance by DiLorenzo; 3 Preludes by Gershwin and his Concerto in F, movement 2; the Vivaldi/Bach Concerto (BWV 539); Rumba by Whitney and Pasorale by Ewazen. Tickets are $15 at the door and free for students of any age.

New to the Warner Robins' arts and cultural community is the Fine Arts Society of Middle Georgia Gallery of Art located at 2507 Moody Road. Promoting the gallery as "A Celebration of Art," the nonprofit group of local fine artists is now accepting spring and summer enrollment for adult and children's art classes.

The classroom area is adjacent to the exhibit space and small library at the gallery. Hours of operation are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Visit the galleries' website at www.fasmidga.org for upcoming events or call 478-396-9198.

The Houston County Library System has three branches serving Warner Robins, Centerville and Perry, which are all open to the public. Each offers a variety of events, including some display space for artwork and even a Teen Budding Artist program at 5 p.m. on second Tuesdays at the Nola Brantley Library in Warner Robins.

Other engaging programs for families at the Nola Brantley location include reading for ages 2 and younger at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesdays; ages 2-5 on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m.; Construct and Create Club for ages 8 and older at 5 p.m. on second Thursdays; and Family Night at 6 p.m. the last Thursday of the month. Home school programs are available at 1 p.m. on Thursdays for grades K-2, at 1:30 p.m. on Thursdays for grades 3-5, and 2:30 p.m. on Thursdays for grades 6-12. The Centerville Public Library offers a variety of family opportunities, including the Georgia Artists with Disabilities Inc.'s 31st annual statewide tour and exhibit. The show runs through Feb. 1 and features 46 award-winning pieces of art from disabled artists across Georgia. The exhibit includes paintings, photographs, clay pottery, mosaics, textiles and other media.

Warner Robins artist Jimmy Maine won "Best in Show" for the acrylic "Morning Song." Mr. Maine also has his paintings available at the Fine Arts Society of Middle Georgia Gallery on Moody Road and was recognized as Houston County Teacher of the Year in 1985.

Regularly scheduled events at the Centerville Library include a bedtime stories (PJs at the Library!), reading at 6:30 p.m. on first Tuesdays; 'tween activities the third Tuesday at 6 p.m. for third through sixth grade; and teen activities at 6 p.m. on the third Tuesday for ages 11-17. Wednesday is dedicated to small children at 10:30 a.m. for ages 2 and younger and at 11:15 a.m. for ages 2-3. Thursdays are dedicated to children ages 3-5 at 10:30 a.m. The home school program for grades K-12 is at 2 p.m. each Monday. The Centerville Library phone number is 478-953-4500.

The Perry Public Library offers programs for children ages 1-3 each Monday at 10:15 a.m.; ages 4 and younger at 11 a.m. on Monday; and ages 3-5 at 10:15 a.m. on Thursdays. Family Night is held at 6 p.m. on second Tuesdays; and Teen Night is at 6 p.m. on fourth Tuesdays. The Perry Public Library phone number is 478-892-3155.
