Warner Robins High students perform award-winning play, 'The Drowsy Chaperone'

Warner Robins High School students will present their public performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone" on Thursday and Sunday.

The play recently won several awards at the 2AAAAA region One Act competition.

"The Drowsy Chaperone" centers on a man, known only to the audience as "Man in Chair." The "Man in Chair" is listening to a Broadway musical recording and it comes to life.

"These characters are the funniest characters you can encounter," Warner Robins High School drama director Nicholas Sostillio said. "The interactions and the response is just hilarious."

Sostillio said that the play relied heavily on comedic timing of very strong characters.

"There are a lot of puns, a lot of satire, a lot of things that the characters were responding to off of each other, and they had to hit the right timing to get the laugh," Sostillio said.

"The Drowsy Chaperone" is a fairly new show. It was first produced on Broadway in 2009 and has not been made into a TV or movie. To get his students to understand and relate to the era -- "The Drowsy Chaperone" is set in the 1920s -- Sostillio had them watch other movies from the era with big acting in which comedic timing was central to the plot.

Five of the cast members were chosen to the Region All-Star cast. Sostillio said that was due to the time his students spent on developing the characters.

Warner Robins High School's performance of "The Drowsy Chaperone" is 7 p.m. Thursday and 3 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $5 per person, and the show is recommended for teenagers and older.
